David Lee Short
David Lee Short, 85, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2021 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Jesse, and siblings Carl, Jean and Margaret. David is survived by his loving wife, Tammy and her son Kyle and wife Noel, as well as his sons, Mike and wife Connie of Williamsburg, Paul and wife Moni of Poquoson, and Mark and wife Heather of Newport News, and his brothers, Jim and Dean. David also leaves behind 7 grandchildren, being Christian, Caitlyn, Kelsey, Logan, Siena, Caroline, and Henley.
David graduated from Warwick High School, and thereafter served in the United States Air Force. He attended the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1962, and the Marshall-Wythe School of Law of the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1964.
David practiced law for several years in Newport News before forming a law partnership in the Teagle Building with his brother Dean. This partnership expanded to be known as Short, Short, Telstad & Kerr, and David became known as a prominent real estate attorney, while working with the outstanding and loyal assistance of his longtime secretary, Merle Guy. David was also a highly regarded entrepreneur and real estate investor, developing and owning multiple housing communities in Virginia.
David was involved in community and civic activities throughout his professional career, while also taking time out to coach or attend his sons’ many sporting events, and serve as an active member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church. He was a longtime member of the Corporate and Foundation Boards for the Boys & Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula, the William and Mary Law School Foundation Board, and many other organizations.
The legacy of David Short cannot be understood without also mentioning his love for sports and competition. David was always involved in a variety of sports to stay active and fit, including tennis, running, golf, and snow skiing. He had tremendous passion for and excelled at the game of golf, where he built a reputation as a talented but always fun and fair competitor. As a member of both Williamsburg Country Club and James River Country Club, he won numerous tournaments, and made great memories with his many friends and family.
David’s family is thankful and extends its appreciation for the care and support he received at Warwick Forrest and Riverside Hospice, particularly the loving care provided by Rosalind Rogers, Rashawn Hopkins, Dawn Hopkins, and Kenyana Moses.
A service will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 45 Main Street, Newport News, Virginia, on Friday, December 3, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, David’s family requests donations be made to Boys & Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula (www.bagclub.com) or the Alzheimer’s Association (act.alz.org).
