Robert “Bob” Warren Edwards

Robert “Bob” Warren Edwards died on October 4, 2021. He was born December 16, 1938 in Newport News and remained a lifelong resident. He graduated from Warwick High School (1956) and Virginia Tech (BSEE, 1964). Before completing his degree, Bob worked as a technician at NACA (NASA predecessor) and Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). After graduating, Bob continued working at NNS until 1999. For 22 of those years, Bob worked as a nuclear test engineer on submarines and cruisers. In retirement, he was a steam train engineer at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. He was an active member of Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, the Lions Club of Newport News, Friendship Force International, and Sister Cities of Newport News. His many mission trips took him to South America, Asia, Africa, and rural United States, where he helped with medical needs, built churches and schools, and rebuilt homes after hurricanes. He was on the board of the Peninsula Community Theatre where he served as stage director and set builder. He was a volunteer EMT and Chaplain for the Newport News Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Suzanne Kates Edwards, parents Horace Deshazo Edwards and Emma Lee Hall Edwards, brother Horace Lee Edwards, and sister Shirley Edwards Trant. He is survived by his daughters Cary Edwards Moore (Brett), and Christine Edwards Dittrich (Darren), and his five grandchildren, Allison Mathena (Kyle), Natalie Moore, Sophie Moore, Rylie Dittrich, Spencer Dittrich, his great-grandson Alton Edwards Mathena, and his dog Herman.

The family would like to sincerely thank the caring doctors and nurses at Riverside Hospital for the excellent care he received.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church Food Pantry in Newport News.

Friends and family are welcome to the graveside service to be held on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park, officiated by Robert Chapman of Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church.
