Helen H. Honeycutt

Helen H. Honeycutt, 93, of Newport News, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2021.  She was born in Gaston, N.C. on November 1, 1927, but made Newport News her home. Helen earned a Bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University in Dietetics and Home Economics and a Master’s degree from Hampton Institute in Education. She retired from Newport News City Schools after 21 years as a Home Economics teacher.  Helen was an exemplary homemaker and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. Her favorite pastimes included reading, genealogy, sewing and needlecrafts, painting, and gardening. Helen and her husband, John, were avid travelers who visited 170 countries across all seven continents. She enjoyed many years with friends as an active member of her retirement community, The Chesapeake. She was also a devoted Christian and a member of the Hilton Presbyterian Church in Newport News.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, John B. Honeycutt, Jr.; sons, Douglas L. and John “David” Honeycutt; parents, Andrew and Myrtle Helton; brothers, Andrew and Robert Helton; and a sister, Margaret Helton.  She is survived by her son, Donald S. Honeycutt; daughter-in-law (wife to David), Martha Honeycutt; grandchildren, Brandon Honeycutt (Christy), Cristen Treu (Justin), Holly South (Matt), and J.D. Honeycutt II; one great-grandchild, Hunter Bynum, many beloved nieces and nephews, and her friend and companion, Tom Walters.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at 12:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.  Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.  Guests are required to wear masks and keep their social distance.  Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
