Sylvia Grey Mt.Castle

Sylvia Grey Mt.Castle, 73, passed away after a two-year courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, in the home she loved, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 9, 1948, in Hampton, Virginia to the late William “Basil” and Pattie B. Gerringer.

Sylvia retired from West Point Stevens store after 20 dedicated years of service.  She had previously worked for both Wornom’s and Heidy’s Arts and Crafts stores where she developed a talent for decorating.  As an avid decorator, Sylvia enjoyed working in her yard, keeping it well-manicured and transforming it for each holiday season. Some of her happiest times were spent with her family, whether traveling or celebrating holidays and birthdays that she always made so very special.

Being a longtime member of Seaford Baptist Church, Sylvia will be remembered for her unwavering love and devotion to the Lord, her family, and friends.  She was so very sweet, kind, and loving to all those around her.  You always felt welcomed in her home, which was her castle.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, William “Ronnie” Gerringer.  She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Vernon H. Mt.Castle; three children, Bryan Blaker (Debra), Geneva Blaker Johnson (Jeff); and Jeffrey Mt.Castle (Desiree); six grandsons, Jonathan Blaker (Kara), Mychal Johnson (Yadira), Alex Johnson, (girlfriend Diane), Nicholas Johnson, Jacob and Joshua Mt. Castle; four great-granddaughters Valerie, Olyvia, and Natalie Johnson and soon to be Kaycee Blaker; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday, September 20, 2021, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Seaford Baptist Church.  The CDC highly recommends masks for inside gatherings. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 21 at 11:00 a.m., officiated by Pastors Aaron West and Michael Howard, at Peninsula Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
