Susan Gregory Gary

Susan Gregory Gary, 79, affectionately called “Sue Sue,” passed to her heavenly home on Monday, May 9, 2022. Susan was born on November 27, 1942, in Newport News, Virginia, to the late Nancy Robins Gary and Frederick Gregory Gary.

Susan grew up in Ferguson Park and worked 42 years for the Newport News Shipyard, now Northrop Grumman. She was also a lifelong member of Riverside Baptist Church.  Over the years she gained many close friends, all of whom wanted to stay in touch with her because she was such a caring, kind, and giving person.

Sue Sue enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. She could often be found working in her yard, planting flowers, painting, or feeding the wild animals. She enjoyed creating things to add beauty to the world. During her 16 years of retirement, she taught herself to paint and created several scrapbooks for members of her family.

Left behind to miss her deeply are her only child, Laurie Artman-McIntosh, and husband Rainy, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends as well as her loyal poodle Louie. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her three sisters, Nancy Gary Williams, Anne Lee Gary Piner, and Louisa Gary Valencourt.  Sue Sue was very close to her parents and sisters and was excited to be going home to see them all again.

Sue Sue had a huge heart for animals and in her lifetime rescued many stray dogs and cats and adopted unwanted pets, even when she already had her own. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite animal charity.

Laurie and Rainy want to recognize the amazing and caring staff of Riverside Hospice.  In the short time we knew them they became like family.  We could not have gotten through this without them.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home.   Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

She was a great cousin with always a caring and positive word for all she met. I am sure there is a big celebration in Heaven with all her friends, sisters, uncle’s, aunt’s, parents, and ancestors… all those who love her.

I was fortunate to have Susan as a close friend since we were 12 years old. We became even closer as we got older. I will miss our phone conversations catching up on the latest news and reliving old times, her beautiful smile and her love of friends and animals. She was always so proud of her daughter, Laurie. Susan was the youngest of 4 daughters and deeply missed her parents and sisters. I’m sure there was a big celebration in heaven when they were all together again.

Susan has been a friend since our teens. I have fond memories of our early days and have enjoyed reconnecting with her over the last few years. I will miss her humor and sweet disposition. Her love of our Lord Jesus was evident in her life and I know she is safe and at peace in His arms.

I was a backyard neighbor to the Gary family in Ferguson Park. I was close friends with Susan’s older sister Louisa, “weezie” as we called her. I loved their parents like my own. Mrs. Gary had a gift of reading palms. She told me when I was 17 that I would marry 3 times and only have one child. She also said I would not be truly happy until later in life. All of that is true! They were the sweetest, most helpful neighbors and worked hard to raise 4 daughters. I knew the two oldest girls too even though they had married and moved on with their lives by the time I met Louisa and Susan. When Louisa passed, I was married and living in a different part of Virginia. I had lived in Germany two different times before then, I lost touch with Susan. I know there is a lot of celebrating in Heaven uniting this wonderful family. I love you all, and miss the younger days when we saw each other often. Bonnie Dodd Knutson

Oh, my heart! Another great loss from the “Gary” family. I first met the Garys when I lived in Ferguson Park. They lived upstairs from us. Susan and I used to socialize, sitting on the back steps with our coloring books, tracing paper, and paper dolls. Later in life, Louisa and I grew close when we started working for the Navy in the shipyard (SUPSHIP Newport News) the same day and realized many months later we were former neighbors. I became very close to the extended Gary family members and have grieved their losses as my own. Laurie, and the rest of the family members, my sincerest condolences. I, once again, grieve with you. Please contact me if I can help in any way. Love you all, Jeanie (757)593-1320

My deepest condolences to Laurie, Rainie, Steve and all of those that loved Susan. Tim has known and loved Susan since he was a very young man. I immediately liked and felt close to Susan, which was apparently her effect on many. She will be greatly missed by Tim and I, as well as many, many others, no doubt.

Susan was such a kind and caring person. I never heard her say a harsh word about anyone. Although I seldom saw her we did keep up with each other on FB. She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.
