Susan Elizabeth Grayson Cordle

Susan Elizabeth Grayson Cordle passed away December 3, 2021, surrounded by her family and friends. She left in laughter and love.

Susan was born April 5, 1963 in Oklahoma and her family ultimately settled in Newport News, Virginia. It was there that Susan started a family of her own and met the love of her life, Dale Cordle.

She worked several jobs over the years to provide for her family, usually in supervisory or managerial roles. Her longest role was as managing partner at The Reef Room, which she and Dale founded in 2006. Outside of work, Susan was entirely devoted to her family and friends. She was renowned for her ability to see the best in everyone and was always willing to help anyone in need. Many times she opened up her home to those that needed stability, shelter, and love. Always encouraging and never judgmental, Susan never quit on her loved ones.

In Susan’s rare downtime, she enjoyed hobbies such as quilting, crafts in general, and anything related to the ocean. She loved spending time with her loved ones and enjoyed hosting get-togethers at their home. Her favorite time of year was Christmas and she would out-do Santa with her generosity and gift-giving!

As testament to how amazing Susan was, below are some quotes from family and friends when they learned of her passing:

“Our Aunt Susan was the nicest, hardest working, most loving and wonderful woman you could ever meet and she made a difference in not only mine but in so many people’s lives.”

“Susan will be missed, she had the biggest kindest heart and was always taking care of others.”

“One of the best role models I knew growing up. Beautiful soul and one of the kindest people I ever knew.”

“She was an awesome person. Always ready and willing to help anyway she could. She will definitely be missed.”

“Susan was an amazing on the go and get it done person who cared about everyone.”

“She was the most loving, caring and supportive aunt/second mom. Truly devastating to our family.“

“Susan was a beautiful soul and she will be so missed!”

Susan is survived by her husband of 31 years, Dale; her daughter, Kim (Matt); her son, Seth (Krystal and Grayson); and great-nephew, Kyler. She also leaves behind her mother, Helen Sawyer; brothers, Jimmy (predeceased), Steve (Suzanne), and Jeff (Wendy); sister, Judy; brothers-in-law, Chris and Brady (Theresa); and many nieces, nephews, and members of a very dear chosen family, especially Denise and Linda.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 12, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, Virginia 23601. The CDC highly recommends masks for inside gatherings.

Susan was a great woman! She helped greatly when Rob Crum and I ran youth ministry and camps years back. I know her family and friends will miss her greatly. Our condolences and prayers for peace for all the ones she has left behind. Apologies we were unable to attend the memorial service.
