Stanley Ross Baker

Stanley Ross Baker, born June 13, 1948, tragically and unexpectedly, passed away in his York County home  on April 7, 2021.  He was kind, good-hearted, and lived a life of value full of purpose and commitment.  Stan was a loving family man and valued member of the Peninsula community.

Stan was a great man, an excellent athlete, a respected businessman, a loving son, and was devoted to his wife and family. The love he had for his wife Janet was inspirational, a true love story that was admired by many.  He was a proud member of the U.S. Navy where he served with honor and distinction.

Stan loved all sports and excelled in basketball and baseball. After high school, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball franchise and played for the Salem Rebels. He then played for the Navy and was selected for the Armed Forces National Baseball All-Stars and the Armed Forces All-World Team. After leaving the Navy, Stan played for Fox Hill and the First & Merchants Bankers fast-pitch softball teams. In 1990, he and his Fox Hill teammates were inducted into the Tidewater Hall of Fame.

Stan’s business acumen and reputation for honesty and integrity made him well respected and in high demand in the local business community. If there were problems to be resolved, he was the “go-to” man as he was always trusted for his knowledge, experience, and dedication.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents Annie Earl and Wylie Baker and his brother Wylie James Baker. He is survived by the love of his life – his devoted wife of 28 years, Janet; and embraced his extended family Kim, Eric, and Heather as his own. He loved being Gramps to Brent, Jadyn, and Ryan – cheering them on at their games and serving as a genuine role model. He always guided them to be humble, strong, courageous, and live a positive and meaningful life.

Stan’s enthusiasm and zest for life were contagious. His kind heart and endearing smile made each day a better day. He was a friend to all and will be dearly missed.
