Sandy McKay Shaal
Sandy McKay Shaal, 58, passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2022. She was born and raised in Newport News, was a resident of Surry County for 30 years, and returned to Newport News in 2011. Sandy was a hairdresser by trade and owned Absolutely U Hair & Body Center. She had a huge smile that lit up the room when she entered. Sandy was strong with incredible belief perseverance even in the face of hardship. She was bold in defending the people she loved. Sandy fearlessly made requests to advocate for the best and wouldn’t settle for less. She knew not only her worth but others – and would remind us. She was independent, she only needed the Lord. Sandy was most definitely passionate about Faith Recovery and seeing the lives of women restored!
She was preceded in death by her mother, Belvie Turner. She is survived by her son, Travis Shaal, wife Kaiten; her father, James Turner; sisters, Sue Rose, Penny Eure, and Jammi Winn; former husband and Travis’ father, Gene Shaal; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 16 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with interment following at Central Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Windsor, Virginia.

I’m shocked and sad. Sandy was the kinda girl that if you met her once you were gonna rember forever. Her smile was a whole mood. Her laugh was loud and contagious. Fly high with the angles my friend. You will be miss and rembered forever
