Sandra L. “Sandy” Wray

Sandra L. “Sandy” Wray, 75, of Hampton, VA, passed away on May 30, 2022, in Hampton, VA after a long-fought battle with cancer.

Sandra was born in Hampton, VA to Doris. H and Lewis E. Lucas (Luke) on May 26, 1947. She was a graduate of Hampton High School in 1965 and received her AS from Brevard College in 1968. She married her high school sweetheart James R. Wray on February 21, 1969, in Las Cruces, NM. She worked in administration for multiple companies ranging from AAFES in Honolulu, HI, to Cox Electronics in Odenton, Maryland, to NASA, First Baptist Church, and Ivy Memorial Church locally as she supported her husband’s military career. Sandra was involved in her church family; she loved being with children and provided Sunday school childcare, and taught vacation bible school for many years.  She served as the treasurer of the Riverdale Regional Civic Association and was often seen volunteering with crafts at the local schools.
 
Sandy was preceded in death by her parents Doris H. and Lewis E. Lucas and her son Michael James Wray. She is survived by her childhood sweetheart and husband of 53 years James R. Wray; daughters, Paula E. Costain and her husband Michael and Judith W. Campbell and her husband Steven; seven grandchildren, Makayla Wray, Aaron Wray, Lucas Costain, Kaitlynne Costain, Jessica Costain, Zachary Costain, and Madison Campbell; brother, William O.  Lucas, and wife Linda; and a devoted daughter-in-law, Constance Wray.
 
Pallbearers will be Tommy Thomas, lifelong friend, sons-in-law, Michael Costain and Steve Campbell, and grandsons Aaron Wray, Lucas Costain, and Zachary Costain.
 
The family will receive friends on Friday, June 3, 2022, from 6:00-7:30 p.m., at Peninsula Funeral Home 11144 Warwick Blvd, Newport News, VA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, at First Baptist Church, 12716 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA officiated by Rev. Dennis Adams and Rev. Randy Shepley, Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church.  Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. A reception will be held immediately after the interment at First Baptist Church.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr, Kobulnicky, and staff of Virginia Oncology, Personal Touch Home Health, and Hospice services for your care during Sandra’s battle with cancer.
 
Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.

    Sandra will be missed by many and within that group is the Riverdale Regional Civic Association. She was the organization treasurer, and she very helpful and giving in the production of community activities. Sandra will be truly missed by the Riverdale Regional Civic Association.
