Michael Finneran

Michael Phillip “Mike” Finneran passed away on August 8, 2022, at age 67.

Mike was born to Phyllis and Jim Finneran in Ohio on October 24, 1954. Upon graduating with a degree in English from Southeastern Massachusetts University, he became a reporter and photographer for the Sentinel and Enterprise in Fitchburg, MA. He then moved on to become an editor at The Record in Bergen County, NJ, The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, VA, and the Miami Herald.

Leaving Miami for a year-long road trip across the U.S., Mike afterwards found employment with NASA, working in public affairs at both Goddard Space Flight Center and Langley Research Center, where he retired in 2018. He was an avid photographer and spent much of his retirement time practicing his passion.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Jim. He leaves behind three children, Gregory, Lena and Niko, mother, Phyllis, brothers Chris and Pat, several nieces and nephews, and Remi, his Anatolian Shepherd. Mike was never without a dog or multiple dogs, who were a source of joy and comfort to him.

A gathering of friends and family will be held on Sunday, August 28, from 1 – 3 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be sent to an animal rescue organization of your choice.
