Mary Veronica McKenzie

Mary Veronica McKenzie, 56, of Newport News, VA was called away on Sunday, September 4, 2022.

Mary was an undeniable light in every life she touched. Her tiny frame packed a huge heart, unbelievable strength, and a fighting spirit. Mary’s love knew no bounds and neither did her generosity. She was truly a selfless person as her joy came from giving to others, especially her children and grandchildren. If you knew Mary, you knew she did not hide what she believed and if she believed in you, there was no limit to her willingness to stand by you and help you achieve your goals.

Born on October 9, 1965, in Incheon, Korea, Mary was a little spitfire straight out of the gate. Her mother shared stories of how much energy she possessed and how the people in her community looked forward to opportunities to be near her. That charisma never changed. She lived in Korea and many states while raising her growing family.

In 2007, she and her four children settled in Clarksville, TN. Doing her very best, she was the type of mother who would try and fill the role of their absent father. She enrolled them in boy scouts and supported her children and many other boys as a leader within the scouting community. Three of her sons achieved the distinguished honor of Eagle Scout.

Quietly noticing and doing her best to be useful to others’ needs, Mary was a presence of strength, love, and laughter to all. During her struggle with cancer, she brought laughter and hope to the other patients in similar situations. From the onset of her diagnosis of Stage 4 cancer, nearly four years ago, she set her mind to make the most of her time. Though she was in immeasurable pain she managed to make her family, doctors, nurses, and fellow patients feel comfortable. Often, she was not satisfied to leave a visit or a phone call unless she made someone laugh. Her focus was always on others. We were so blessed to have been in her sightline or within an earshot, to have heard her voice and especially her laugh. Her absence is felt deeply by those left behind. Yet, we know that through her children and grandchildren we have a testament of Mary’s living love, strength, and joy as they continue to live their lives with her presence within them. Mary will always be here with us.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

We send you our love and prayers, thoughts and deepest condolences for a daughter, sister, mother, aunt and friend taken too soon. May you forever feel her strength, love and laughter in your hearts.
Mary was a force and my earliest memories were “I so happy she’s on my side”. The planet will miss that force and now as she looks over all of us from heaven, I am so honored she’s on my side.
