Mae Winslow Weaver
Our Mom, Mae Winslow Weaver, passed away on January 20, 2022. She was 89 years feisty!
Born in Hertford, NC, she lived most of her childhood at the Baptist Children’s Home in Kinston, NC. There she had a happy and nurturing upbringing while making lifelong friends.
After graduating high school, Mom moved to Newport News to begin a job at the C&O Railroad, where she met the love of her life, a handsome young tugboat captain named Dee Weaver. They married in 1952 and so began 56 years of love, fun and family.
She was an active member of North Riverside Baptist Church where she often kept the nursery.
Mom and Dad moved from Newport News to Lake Gaston in 1987 where they entertained family and friends with boat rides, campfires and good food.
Some random goodies about Mom:
She loved a glass of good wine. And bad wine.
She hated being cold.
She never pumped gas in her car. Ever.
She never hesitated to give you her opinion, whether asked for or not.
She never told secrets entrusted to her.
She had a talent for finding the lawn chair that would collapse when sat in, and there were many jokes about that.
She always seemed to know what mischief we kids were up to, so much so that we called her “witch” behind her back. But she knew that too and as we got older it became a family joke. No one got away with anything with a Witch in the house!
Mom lost some of her sparkle after Dad died, but she remained positive and involved with life. Even as her health issues flared she would often say “it is what it is.”
In recent years her short-term memory faltered, but she hung in there and never wasted time by complaining. Her pride, or as we called it — stubbornness –remained constant. Even the nurse who was with her when she passed told us that she was a lady right to the end.
We will miss her.
Mom leaves behind 5 children — sons David and Jordan, daughters Gail and Susan (Tim) and a bonus daughter, Cindy. She also leaves behind six beloved grandchildren, Bo (Erin), Lindsey (Chris), Casey (Chris), Justin, Morgan (Tim), and Matthew (Kara); and great grandchildren Layne, Connor, Bryson, Korey, Cooper, Ava, Carter, Merritt, Elleree and newborn Dolly. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 27 at 9:00 AM at Peninsula Funeral Home with a service to follow at 10:00AM.
