Leon T. “L. T.” Vaughan III. Lt. Col. (USAF/Ret)

Leon T. “L. T.” Vaughan III, Lt. Col. (USAF/Ret) passed from this life on December 17, 2020. L.T. grew up in Hilton Village section of Newport News, where he attended Warwick High School, graduating with the class of 1956. After High school, he attended Virginia Tech where he was in the Corp of Cadets. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned in the united States Air force.

After teaching English at Warwick High School for a year he entered the Air Force where he served on active duty for 23 years. He attended pilot training at Williams AFB, Arizona and earned his silver pilot’s wings in 1962. He was a troop carrier-transport pilot and flew missions in Europe, the Middle East and Asia in addition to missions flown in the United States. In the late 60’s during the Viet Nam conflict, L.T. flew for three and a half years in South East Asia. He retired as a Lt. Colonel.

L.T. had a great affection for the United States Air Force and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Since 1981, L.T. has lived on the Peninsula near his home town of Hilton Village where he has been an active member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. He was preceded in death by his Father, Leon T. Vaughan Jr., his mother Eileen Winn Vaughan, and his son William Scott Vaughan. Hs is survived by his wife of 60 years, Patricia Lail Vaughan, his daughter, Cynthia Lynn Vaughan, granddaughter Ashley Nicole Bennett and brother, Douglas Haynes Vaughan.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate gifts to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Salvation Army or the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula.

Due to the Covid virus funeral arrangements are being postponed until a later date.
