Joanne Curtis Pauley

Joanne Curtis Pauley of Fairfax, Virginia, formerly of Newport News, passed away on January 23, 2023. She was born in Newport News to Aubrey “Abe” Curtis and Lavenia “Beanie” Curtis. She was raised in the Beaconsdale area of Newport News and graduated from Homer L. Ferguson High School. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edgar “Sonny” Pauley.

Left to cherish her memories are her sons, Edgar “Eddie” Pauley of Fairfax, with whom she resided; and Russell Pauley of Woodbridge, Virginia; her good friend and sister-in-law Sue Pauley (Michael), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends – all of whom were recipients of Joanne’s funny laugh and positive outlook on life.

Joanne loved a good practical joke, either as giver or receiver; shared her infectious and boisterous laugh with all; and was a definite “live in the moment” person. She loved her “boys” and remained close to both. She had many social media friends with whom she shared daily messages, chats, and of course jokes! Joanne was a young wife and mother when she was given a diagnosis with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Even with mobility challenges, she fought all of the battles this disease handed to her with vigor and positivity.

In honor and memory of Joanne: belly laugh; make someone else laugh; live in the moment, and hug your kids. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Joanne’s memory to “Here for the Girls,” an organization whose mission is supporting young women diagnosed with breast cancer (Here for the Girls, 1309 Jamestown Rd., #204, Williamsburg, VA 23185, www.hereforthegirls.org).

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601

Joanne. Was a caring kind person. I grew up with her in Beaconsdale & swam on the swimming team with her. I am truly saddened by her passing. My deepest sympathy to her family.

Joanne, fairy, you made me, and all of your friends in Toucanville smile every single day, you were always the cheerful, happy, smiley, and yes, absolutely bonkers in the best of ways, out friendship lasted many years and it’s hard to think your not there now, the toucan however… Knows you still are and that now your up there misbehaving with those newly found angel wings, I know you’ll still be looking down, pulling my leg mercilessly and always..being ‘you’

With all my love, to you up there and all your wonderful family…

I too met Joanne, through Facebook. She had an amazing sense of humor and was always the first to greet others in our chat group with her daily uplifting messages. Prayers for all of her loved ones.

Although I only knew her through Social Media and never had the pleasure of meeting her in person- she was such a beautiful soul. Always made me smile and laugh. She will be missed. RIP our fairy angel Jo xox

I’m so sorry to discover this. We fished together once in Maryland and remained Facebook friends. She had a great sense of humour and was a positive light in a sometimes dreary world. RIP friend. 💔
