Harold L. Freeland

Harold L. Freeland passed away on Friday, August 20, 2021, at Riverside Hospital.  He was a native of Greer, South Carolina and had been a resident of Newport News for the past 49 years.  Harold retired from the U.S. Navy as Chief Petty Officer Seabee after 22 years of service and then went on to work for Busch Gardens for 16 years.   Harold was Protestant by faith, president of the VFW, Bermuda Branch in 1971, an avid golfer and a fan of the Red Skins.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold N. Freeland and Catherine I. Freeland.  He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lillian D. Freeland; four daughters, Roberta Schroeder (Rick), Teresa Reed, Tracey Reutt (Andrew), and Cathie Selk; seven grandchildren, Amber, Jessica, Erik, David, Derrick, Kierstin and Crystal; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Doug Freeland (Brenda); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Harold was a devoted husband, father and Papa and his family will miss him dearly.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.  A graveside service, officiated by Pastor Wes Taylor, will be held on Wednesday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park. The CDC highly recommends masks for inside gatherings.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America (https://secure.pva.org) or Alzheimer’s Association (https://www.alz.org).

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home.
