Gilbert N. Askew, Jr.

Gilbert N. Askew, Jr. passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at his residence in Hampton, VA. Gilbert’s hobbies were working on cars in his spare time and going to car shows.

He served in the U.S. Army and upon his release from the service, went to work at the shipyard. Gilbert loved watching Nascar every weekend during race season and spending every minute he could with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his father Gilbert N Askew, Sr., and his wife of fifty years, Barbara. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Walters; two daughters, Tina Hadsock (Justin) and Virginia Hunter (Keith); five grandchildren, Danyelle (Aaron), Jay (Jada) Askew, Dustin (Katlyn) Hadsock, Kelsey (Varis), and Daniel Hadsock; three great-grandchildren, Bentley, Remington, Kayce; and two great-grandchildren on the way; and his two sisters, Connie and Diane.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 4 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home.  A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, June 5, at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

    My sincere condolences to Mr. Askew’s immediate and extended family member’s. Mr. Askew will be missed by all. I had the pleasure to meet him several times. A true southern gentleman.
