Eugene S. Haislip

Eugene S. Haislip, of Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2021, at the age of 90, surrounded by family and friends.

Gene was a husband to Lois (deceased), father to Frank, James (deceased) and Kenneth, father-in-law to Claire, and grandfather to Sean and Ian. Originally a son of the Northern Neck and a proud Waterman by trade, he left to serve his country, which he did so for 24 years. Gene traveled the world from Panama to Alaska, Germany, and Vietnam. A survivor of three tours of duty in Vietnam, Gene proudly served with the 1st Air Cavalry Division and later the 101st Airborne Division. Gene served with dignity, even when it wasn’t considered to be fashionable and he did so with honor and was recognized for his bravery under fire.

More importantly, Gene was a friend to all that he met. Quiet but fearless and never above others. Remembering his humble beginnings, Gene shared with all, enjoyed helping others, and was a big believer in “giving with a warm hand”.

He was a shining example of what it meant to be a good man and he will always be our family’s guiding star.
Rest in Peace Dad, you did your best, raised a good family, never complained about circumstances, and always did what was right. We are proud to have had you as a father and even prouder to carry your last name.

A private funeral service with full military honors will be held on July 23, 2021 at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the cemetery in support of our veterans who proudly served this nation.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.
