Douglas Blake Chapman
Douglas Blake Chapman, 80, passed away on December 16, 2022 in his home, surrounded by family. Douglas was born on December 15, 1942 and was a Newport News resident for his entire life. He was a graduate of Newport News High School, class of 1961, as well as a graduate of Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School, class of 1967. Douglas married the love of his life, Linda, in 1965, and together, they had two children: Michael and Donna. They had a wonderful life together.
In his free time, Douglas enjoyed playing golf, gambling trips with his brother Wayne, and spending time with family. After 49 years (11 of those with Gibbs & Cox), Douglas retired from the Newport News Shipyard as a Design Engineer and Supervisor in 2016. During his time with Gibbs and Cox and Newport News Shipyard, Douglas worked on submarines and aircraft carriers, specializing in stowage. After his retirement, he and his wife Linda enjoyed traveling and going on cruises with his brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Vicky. Doug cherished many things throughout his lifetime, but most special to him was the family he and his wife created, and his lifelong friendship with Don and Elizabeth Nelson.
Douglas is preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Chapman, Sr. and Mabel Chapman, his daughter, Donna Foley, along with 4 brothers, and 2 sisters.
Douglas is survived by his wife of 57 years, Linda Hill Chapman, his son, Michael Chapman (Gilda), 3 grandchildren; Heather McSwine (Lewis), Christopher Ivey (Linsey), Blake Ivey (Jamacia), 6 great-grandchildren; Trinity Green, Elijah Perriello, Ava Perriello, Cooper Ivey, Leia McSwine, Preston Ivey; his brothers, Eugene Chapman, Wayne Chapman (Vicky), and many nieces and nephews.
Douglas’ celebration of life service will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. at Hilton Presbyterian Church, 34 Main Street, Newport News, VA. There will be a reception directly after the service in the church’s fellowship hall.
Any floral arrangements may be sent directly to Hilton Presbyterian Church.

Doug was such a special person. When I was young, he might as well have been Dad #2, as I spent many an hour (might as well say years in accumulation) over there with his son (and my great friend) Michael. One of the many memories I have of Doug, is he loved to make home-made from scratch pizzas and during a many a sleep over with Michael, what awesome pizza slices that were not eaten hot out of the oven surely were eaten cold the next morning out of the refrigerator. Doug took us to the YMCA for years to go swimming and shoot basketball. Doug had such a great smile and genuinely cared for all of those who were close to him. I will miss Doug’s uplifting personality, smile and his great spirit. Prayers for comfort to the entire Chapman family.
I only met Doug one time but he was very loving and friendly. Doug was my fiance clyde hills uncle. I wish I could of got to know him better.
Thinking of you today, Aunt Linda, Michael and grandchildren/great-grandchildren, Eugene, Wayne/Vicki and your friends as you remember and celebrate Uncle Doug’s life on earth and now in heaven.
