Doris Elliott Truman

Doris Elliott Truman entered into Eternal Rest in the Presence of her Lord on Monday evening, August 8, 2022. Affectionately known as Mama and Moddie to those who knew and loved her best, she had been under the tender care of her children, in her own home, for the last six years after suffering a series of strokes. She continued to enjoy regular visits from her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren and still hosted Christmas Breakfast when all 40 would gather in her home.

Born in Marion, North Carolina on Groundhog’s Day in 1931, she was the last living of four siblings.  At the age of 15, she moved to the Peninsula and met her husband, Bill, shortly after. The two remained in Hampton, where they raised their four children and enjoyed the next four generations of the fruit of their union. They were married for 59 years when Bill preceded his Doris in death.
Doris was a devoted member of West Hampton Baptist Church and attended regularly before she became homebound after her first stroke.

Her loving memory is left to be cherished by her four children: Kim (Ronnie), David, Kathy (Lynn), and Deena (Dan); six grandchildren: Jody (Stephen), Mandy (Mike), Joel (Bonnie), Corey (Tiffane), Jared (Cathy) and Tyler (Sheryll); seventeen great-grandchildren: Joshua (Juliet), Ayanna (Ryan), Madison, Michala, Tony, Niko, Daris (Moddie’s namesake), Alivia, Bella Rose, Sammy, Lincoln, Waylon, Noelani, Jaxon, Juliette, Kellynn, and Landon; and her three great-great-grandchildren: Sadie, Roland and Matthias.

Though she is no longer with us, the family rejoices in knowing she is with her Lord and reunited with family and friends. The family is incredibly thankful for the excellent care given to her by the Sentara Hospice Team.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 15 at 3:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park on Warwick Blvd in Newport News.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to West Hampton Baptist Church. Checks can be mailed to 631 Aberdeen Rd, Hampton, VA 23661. Please specify “Heart for the House” in the memo line.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Doris Truman. I meet Ms. Doris years ago at West Hampton Baptist Church and she was so sweet lady, we would talk from time to time. I will be praying for the family and friends for strength to get through this hard time. Doris will be missed by many but just know that the bible lets us know that we will see her again. I am so thankful for the resurrection and know that we will be seeing are loved ones again sure does give me a lot of hope.. So until that day comes Ms. Doris will be in my memories. Sending hugs your way.

We are hugging her entire loving, compassionate and devoted family, who gave her exceptional care for not only the past 6 years, but also her entire life. Doris was a gracious, beautiful and loving lady. Her life mattered because she was an Angel on Earth. I still have her elegantly written letters where she would tell me of another grandchild/great grandchild (perhaps great/great grandchild) being born and all the family gatherings they experienced. My mother-in-law said that Doris had such a tight knit family, who were always there when she needed them, or just there every day to spend time with her. She was a joy to be around, and she lived an extremely wonderful life. She deserved the best that life had to offer, and God blessed her with a beautiful family with open hearts and positive spirits. Rest In Peace, our beloved Doris. We always loved you.

Our family has such fond memories of your parents and all of you, Our lives have crossed in many ways, with your Dad’s and John’s Dad work at LAFB, Kim and Kathy taught our son, Tray, how to swim and how to play poker, when they were lifeguards at Riverdale Apartments, and professionally our lives met in the teaching field. We have celebrated special Anniversaries together and sadly, your family joined us to Honor both Dad and Mom, when we lost them. Although, we cannot physically be with your family to share in your tribute to your beautiful, compassionate, and loving mother, we will be with you in mind, honor, and heartfelt loss. Our fond memories of both your parents and your family are such a tribute to them and to each of you, as each of you inspire the best in others and serve as role models to all of us. We send all our deepest sympathy and please know in this time of darkness, your mother’s sweet and bright light shines forever in the heavenly stars. May each of you find peace in the knowledge of how loved each of you are and that unconditional love heals the wounds of loss.
