Dennis John Pointer of Newport News passed away Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Riverside Hospital. An Army Veteran, John, or “DJ” also served his community as a Newport News Police Officer for 32 years. During his time with Newport News, he served as an instructor on multiple subjects of the department, as well as worked closely with the Police Benevolent Association as the chapter President for 12 years.  John was known for his honest, forthright, and dedicated leadership.

John was preceded in death by his mother Julia, brother Robert, and father Eugene. He is survived by his wife of 28 years Amy Pointer; daughters Heather (Robert Stone) and Taylor (Devin Bowen); two grandsons John and Braylon; brother Gene of Newport News;  sisters Gwen (Neala McLellon) of Yorktown and Pam Muncy of Kentucky; nephews Adam and Allen Muncy also of Kentucky; in-laws Paula and Wilton Jordan; sister-in-law Cindy Jordan (children: Justin, Haley, and Riley); brother-in-law Michael Jordan (wife: Erica, children: Caleb, Alyssa, Brendan, Meghan).

The family extends their enormous love and gratitude to Gwen for her support during this difficult time, as well as to Officers Sgt. X.O. Falero, Lt. Matthew Johnson, and MPO Jeffrey Wright. John’s career introduced us to a family like no other and for that, we will always be grateful.

The family will receive friends and well-wishers from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 14 at Peninsula Funeral Home. A Memorial service will be held in his honor at 9:00 a.m., on Friday, July 15, 2022, at the funeral home, with the burial taking place at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Cemetery, in Suffolk.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Police Benevolent Foundation (https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/PBF).

DJ was perhaps the finest human being I ever met. I will forever be grateful for his warm and friendly disposition, kind heart, and love of introducing kids to policing. It is almost impossible to think of the youth programs of the department without thinking of him or hearing that booming voice. I will forever feel grateful for having known him. Keeping all of you in our prayers. Thank you for allowing DJ to share his life with so many people.

I had the honor to work the night shift with John in North Precinct. Most nights, thank goodness, were “routine,” but there were some hot summer nights where we all were running call to call. We saw people at their worst in horrific situations. There were nights where you felt so exhausted and just needed that little extra lift to get you through the rest of the shift, then John would get on the police radio. John was so funny. His humor cut like a knife, so sharp, so witty. A few humorous comments from John to NNPD dispatch, would have as all in stitches laughing, making us all ready to take on the next call, with a smile on our faces. John was not just a great officer, but he lifted the spirits of those who knew him. I will miss you lots John. Thanks for making the job so fun and the aweful times bearable. He spoke of his family at work often and loved you all immensely. My prayers to you all. God speed John.
