Betty Simpson Chandler

Betty Simpson Chandler went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 16, 2021. She was a native of Piedmont, South Carolina, and a longtime resident of Newport News.

Betty was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an active member of Temple Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, Training Union, and assisted the choir program. She worked as an administrative assistant for Newport News Public School for 20 years.

Betty is preceded in rest by her husband, James Chandler, and daughter Jill Jones. Betty is survived by siblings Martha (David) Householder and Eddie (Angela) Simpson, and her son, James W. Chandler II and wife, Connie, and their two daughters, Sarah (Zak) McDonald and their children Wyatt and Makenna, and Emily Chandler and her son Jackson; Betty’s son, J. Dale Chandler and his children, Karen (Paul) Owens and their children Joshua and Caleb, and Jeffrey Chandler Jr. (Robin), and their children Arlo and Otis; Betty’s daughter, Cheryl Rose (Rupert), and their children, Matthew Rose, and his sons, Jacob and Chandler, Stephen Rose and his daughters, Halle and Maggee, and Elizabeth (Jay) Hipes and their children, Trey, Charlotte, and Esther; Betty’s daughter (Jill Jones deceased) and her daughters, Jillian Jones, Jahnel (Spencer) Bashford, and their daughters, Winter, Meadow, and Ivy, and Jayla Jones.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 19, 2021, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm at Temple Baptist Church, 235 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA, with a funeral service following to be held at 2:00 pm, with Rev. Rupert H. Rose Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The CDC highly recommends masks for inside gatherings.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Temple Baptist Church, designated to The Lottie Moon Christmas Offering.

    Dear Jillian, Jayla and Jahnel, I am so sorry to hear of your grandmother’s passing. May God Bless and keep You and the family. My heart felt sympathy to you all.
