Bennie E. Barnett

Bennie Everson Barnett passed away peacefully at his home on August 18, 2021.  He was born in New Bern, North Carolina on November 9, 1926, and moved to Newport News, Virginia in 1940.  

Bennie graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Commerce degree in June 1951. He served in the United States Army during World War II in 1945-46 and during the Korean War in 1951-53.  

Bennie met his sweetheart while attending First Baptist Church in Newport News.  Elizabeth became his wife in April 1958.  Bennie retired from Advex Corporation after 23 years of service; he was President of Advex from 1986 until his retirement in 1997.  He was a member and deacon of North Riverside Baptist Church and a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church at the time of passing.

Bennie was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and five sisters and by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Edmonds Barnett.  He leaves two daughters, Rebecca Lynn Barnett of Newport News and Elizabeth Barnett Hunt (Tony) of Memphis, Tennessee, and three grandsons, Trip, A.J., and Will, also of Memphis.

The family will receive visitors from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 23, 2021, at the Peninsula Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, August 24 at 10:00 a.m. with interment following at Peninsula Memorial Park.   The CDC highly recommends masks for inside gatherings.
