Annie Elizabeth Frazier Burton

Our beloved Mother, Annie Elizabeth Frazier Burton, 100, arrived at her heavenly home on September 21, 2021. Annie was born on July 2, 1921, in Warren County, North Carolina, and was the daughter of Charlie and Mattie (Weaver) Frazier.

Annie attended public schools in Warren County and graduated from John Graham High School. She was married to the late Clarence Burton in 1939, and together they raised five children. She was an active member at West Hampton Baptist Church and Riverside Baptist Church. Annie was an avid reader and studied her Bible faithfully. She taught Sunday school for 40 years and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and freezing much of the food that was grown in the family garden. She was deeply affectionate to all that knew her, and her grandchildren fondly referred to her as, “Mama Annie.”

She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Burton, her brother Thomas Frazier, her son C. Charles Burton, her daughter Mary Louise Burton Gayle, grandson Michael Gayle, and sons-in-law William Gayle and Lanny Midkiff. She is survived by her son John F. Burton (Jean), daughter Lynda Burton Midkiff, and daughter Betty Burton Gary (Rocky), daughter-in-law Linda H. Burton, as well as 9 grandchildren (Lee, Steven, Jennifer, Brian, Charles (Chuck), A `my, Rebecca (Bex), Jason, and Kristen), and 14 great-grandchildren (Julianna, Savannah, Danielle, Madison, Emma, Jarred, Caitlyn, Brooke, Beau, Abigail, William, Brody, Paige, and Jack).

Annie recently celebrated her 100th birthday at Churchland House and by gathering with her loving family in Newport News. She received hundreds of cards from across the United States.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, October 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Virginia 23601, followed by a visitation until 4:30 p.m. The CDC highly recommends masks for inside gatherings. She will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband on the anniversary of their wedding, October 9th, in a graveside service at 3 pm, at Zion UMC in Norlina, North Carolina.
