Alvin C. Norman, Sr.

Alvin C. Norman, Sr. went to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on December 11, 2020. He was 85. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Alvin and Pearl Norman; in-laws, Horace and Vivian Underwood; and brother-in-law, Cecil Underwood.

He met his sweetheart, Barbara Underwood at Newport News High School in 1953. Three years later they were married (for 64 years), having four children, Al Jr., Cathy LaRussa (Mike), Denise Peel (Scott), and Martha Sullivan (Joe). They had 12 grandchildren, Jake, Austin, Nick and Troy Norman, Mike, Bryan (Corie) and Blake (BryAnna) LaRussa, Scott, Matthew and Allison Peel, and Joe and Sophie Sullivan; great-grandchildren, twins Cole and Brynlee LaRussa; and pet labradoodle, Cody. He is survived by brothers, Tommy (Carol) and Barry (Marcia); brother-in-law, Horace (Pat) Underwood; and sister-in-law, Linda Underwood.

Alvin served in leadership roles and as Sunday School teacher for 35 years at his church. He played baseball for Newport News High school, American Legion, Apprentice School, Tri County league and Newport News Dodgers semi-pro team. Alvin worked as a design engineer with Newport News Shipyard and retired in 2001 from Civil Service. He spent his retirement enjoying his beloved family, the grandchildren’s sporting events and many family celebrations.

The family will celebrate Alvin’s life at 1:30 on Friday, December 18, 2020 at Denbigh United Presbyterian Church. The Service may be viewed live at 1:30 or later by going to Facebook.com/denbighpres. Donations may be made to the church in honor of Alvin.
