Alice Carter Justice

Alice Carter Justice, 93, of Newport News, Virginia, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 7, 2023. Born Alice Lee Carter in Rescue, Virginia, just three months before the Great Depression, Alice from a very early age spent time on the water with her mother and father, who was an oysterman fisherman, and developed a lifelong love of the water.

Alice lived most of her childhood and teen years in Hampton, Virginia, graduating from Hampton High School in 1947. In addition to being a majorette for HHS, Alice marched for the Hampton Drum & Bugle Corps in the first-ever Oyster Bowl Parade.
Alice met the love of her life, Charles E. Justice of Newport News, Virginia, in 1948. The two were married on September 3, 1949, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Hampton, where Alice was active as a teen.

After a brief stint living in Philadelphia where Charles was attending a technical school, the couple returned to Newport News and were expecting their first child when Charles was called up as an Army Reservist for the Korean War. The couple had three children, Charles Jr., born during his father’s deployment, followed in subsequent years by a daughter, Elaine, and a son, Gary.

Throughout their marriage, Alice and Charles were dedicated Christians and actively involved members of several Baptist churches in Newport News, including First Baptist, where Alice sang in the choir even before becoming a member. They also were among new congregations in the Denbigh area, including Richneck Mission, which became Richneck Baptist Church, and Colony Mission, which merged with Tabernacle Baptist Church. At Tabernacle, Alice was on the building committee for the new church structure in Denbigh, active in choir, taught Sunday School to elementary-age children for 16 years, and was president of the church’s Woman’s Missionary Union.

Alice was an active PTA parent, and once her children were in school, managed to balance family life with work at Newport News Shipbuilding. She served as a bookkeeper in the accounts payable department for the next 16 years, retiring in her early 60s due to her husband’s health.

After Charles’ passing, Alice continued her devotion to her church, to her family, and to the travel that she and Charles enjoyed so much. Her dear companion, the late Edward D. Lett of Newport News, made many trips with her and was a loving grandfather to her grandchildren as well as his own.

Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband Charles E. Justice Sr., parents, Lawrence H. Carter and Martha S. Carter, son Charles Jr., daughter-in-law P. Faithe Justice, and son-in-law William H. Spinks. She is survived by her daughter S. Elaine Justice of Atlanta, son Gary S. Justice of Newport News, granddaughters Virginia C. Spinks of Atlanta, Lauren A. Gardner of Norfolk, and grandson Jacob S. Justice of Newport News.

A visitation will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home on Friday, January 13, 2023, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, followed by interment in Peninsula Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, one may make a donation in Alice’s honor to Regent University in Virginia Beach (include the Charles E. Justice Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund in the memo line), Tabernacle Baptist Church in Newport News, or Samaritan’s Purse.

Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

My Aunt Alice was an outspoken zealous follower of Jesus with a servant heart, the outstanding supportive mother of my three cousins and their families, and a faithful worker committed to whatever task the Lord led her to do. She always loved my mother and me…and really has loved my wife Sue since I finally got married almost 5 years ago. What a privilege to know Alice Justice. I look forward to meeting her in Heaven one day… I express sympathy to the entire family… and rejoice in her home going… “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)
