Alan Charles Mason

Alan Charles Mason, Virgo, 78, lover of t-shirts, beer trucks, most recently baseball hats, and non-gender specific sunglasses passed away November 12, 2022. Alan is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Joyce Mason. Alan is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Mason: his two children, son, Christopher Elliott, daughter, Layne (Sean) Perryman; four grandchildren, Richard Perryman, Laura Perryman, Gilles Elliott, and Christabelle Elliott; his three siblings, Norman (Betsy) Mason, Mary Chris Mason, and Leslie (Mike) Cherry, a host of nieces and nephews, as well as an extended family.

Alan took fashion advice from no one. Tye-dye t-shirts, yes. Socks but no shoes, also yes. Sleeves? Not today, sir. It was never a matter of “should” he go to dinner at his favorite restaurant, The Poquoson Diner, but rather “when”. Days ending in Y were always the perfect day to spend with his wife Donna, fishing and crabbing off of Bubbas Pier.

Alan was a rolling portrait of irony. He lost the use of his legs from polio at a very young age yet push-mowed the grass, had a black belt in karate, and lived by the motto “no help is good help”. NRA all day while believeing the Democratic party is the only party. Dogs, specifically German Shepherds were the only companion one should have, yet lived with and loved cats for the last twenty years.

There were many people Alan loved but none more than his wife, Donna. Although they found each other later in life, they were always destined to be. He spent the last twenty years with his beautiful bride. Donna was his first thought in the morning and last thought of the night. His love for his most precious wife will last eternal.

The family would like to thank the staff at Sentara Careplex Hospital in Hampton, VA for their patience, care and vigor while caring for our Alan.

“Always look out for number one”. Alan Charles Mason

A service will be held at Peninsula Funeral Home, Newport News, VA December 3, 2022 at 3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers Alan’s wife has requested donations be made to Poquoson Animal Welfare Sanctuary (P.A.W.S).

The most salt of the earth person I’ve known.

Happiness for him was his family, his local rock bands, trying to get you to guess at how much something cost, and a chicken drumstick at the end of a string dangling from Bubba’s Pier.

‘Boy I’ll tell you what’ Alan, you will be dearly missed.

As he navigates his new ways, may he be guided by wolves and what he knew to be his true heritage. He would be touched by the words spoken by his beloved daughter.

“We will never forget you, or this, or here – for as long as we live and sometime after that, too”. ❤️
    Love you always, granddaddy!

I did not know Alan very well but I am fortunate enough to know his family extremely well. It’s really cool to know they are the amazing people they are because of Alan’s influence. From their toughness and resilience to their big hearts, sense of humor, and sense of fashion it’s all a gift passed down from Alan. He will be missed but will never be gone as his family carries these traits and passes them down to the generations to come. Thank you for molding the people I love into who they are today. Love y’all ❤️

John may not remember now but he had only good things to say about his “buddy” next door. Thank you for being his friend especially in the last year or two. My heart goes out to Donna and the family during this time. Rest in the knowledge that his body is healed and he is up there running with those wolves he loved so much!! He will definitely be missed!

I only knew Alan the last two years but he was always an interesting person to talk to. He had great stories about his earlier years and loved to sit on his front porch and garden and people watch all the time. I have a fond memory of him sitting out in the yard at PAWS with a cat on his lap and others investigating his wheelchair. I’m glad that you are at peace now. Thank you for the memories and we’ll take care of Donna for you.

“That was some good stuff” or something similar is what I remember Alan saying after every meal no matter where we dined.
It’s 10pm, he was ready to get the night started by heading to a bar to listen to live music. Us younger folks couldn’t hang … LoL!
He lived an interesting & full life.
A disability didn’t stop him & for that I had much respect because he reminded me of my Dad in that sense.
A good man that will be missed but left behind plenty of good memories to hold on to.

One of the best friends and neighbors you could’ve ever asked for. He was like a grandfather to my son and will be dearly missed by us both, especially his stories and going to random events or crabbing off the pier with him. Until we meet again Alan, we’ll keep the laughter going for you, and thanks for all the fond memories.
